Demons didn’t dream. Kuro was no exception (except for the one, always the same images, always repeating), but in the fog of the drug, a memory Kuro had been trying to push away lifted up out of the shadows of his mind. He lay prone and helpless, watching in his mind as two kitsune peered curiously from the shadows of the trees on the Blue Ridge Parkway as a boy he would shortly learn was named Kenneth McMahon drove away, their eyes reflecting the light of the newly risen sun behind him.

I don’t want to remember this, Kuro told himself. I don’t want to watch her die again.
